My Beauty Rules: Edie Campbell

The Brit model on sleep-smudged eyeliner, massage goals and the mullet that made her famous.

WHO: Edie Campbell, the face of YSL Black Opium (and award-winning jockey)

‘My gran was a model, too, but her style was pretty much the opposite of mine. She was really old-school glam and loved lipstick and strong arched eyebrows. My approach to beauty is definitely more utilitarian and functional. I like a dark, smudgy liner look. The YSL Couture Kajal Pencil is great for that. On a night out, I’ll just use a bit of concealer on any redness and under my eyes, then a taupe eyeshadow and some brow gel. I’m really imprecise with my make-up. I never like it to look too perfect, so I just kind of work it around my eyes with my finger. Sometimes I think eye make-up looks better slept in, so I’ll just whack more on in the morning!’

‘When I was 15, I dyed my hair green and blue. Then, at 20, I chopped it all off and had a little mullet. That was probably the most daring look I’ve gone for. I’m lucky enough to work in an industry where I can have fun with my look, so I take advantage of that. The only thing I haven’t done is shave my hair off, so maybe that’s next! I’m not very good at looking after my colour but I do use hair oils and treatments for my bleached hair.’

‘I love the way perfume forms an impression of you that isn’t visual. It follows you around and creates a kind of aura. My favourite perfume is YSL’s Black Opium. I’ve been wearing it for ages, ever since it first launched.’

‘My skin doesn’t usually break out. I’m pretty good with my cleansing routine, though, and use a cleanser with a Foreo, which is like a little electronic skin buffer. I went to South Korea for work recently and picked up loads of sheet masks, so if I’m tired I’ll use one of those, too.’

‘I was vegan for about five minutes. The someone opened a delicious looking cheese and it was all over! I’m not really that strict with my diet. In general, I try to eat plenty of vegetables and not too much cake. And definitely no McDonald’s, but that’s just because I don’t like it. If I’m in London, I love going for a grand dinner somewhere like The Wolseley, although I’m also happy to have a Deliveroo.’

‘I’m not the type of girl who’s going to lie on her back and do crunches at home. It’s just not me, I’m not motivated enough. I try and to do a Pilates class or have a swim instead to keep fit. Whenever I’m at home in Warwickshire, I go horse riding about four times a week — it’s the best full-body workout.’

‘Every now and then, I do the whole cinematic thing of treating myself to a really long soak with candles and bath oil. But usually I just jump in and out of the shower really fast. My ultimate luxury would definitely be a massage. If I do have one, I want it to be expensive — a proper all-over two-hour job.’
